Month 11, Day 3: Chili Dog Max

Saturday morning, Mom and Dad were watching a food show on cable featuring chili dogs from rival shops in Detroit. Hmm-mmm. Mom turned to Dad and asked, "How far are we from Detroit?" Dad instead proposed that we take a quicker family trip to a DC fixture - Ben's Chili Bowl. Ben's has been featured in many a food and travel show, including No Reservations. But we couldn't just take Anthony Bourdain's word for it. So off we went...

Surprisingly, we were able to get a parking spot directly across the street from Ben's on U-Street. The line of customers went out the door and down the alleyway, where we listened to the accoustic band performing in front.

The view of inside the diner from the alley window.

Ben's is across the street from another historical landmark - the True Reformer Building. It features the mural of Duke Ellington along the side.

The wait actually wasn't as long as we expected, and we were soon seated in a booth with a good view of the crowds coming through the door (many with cameras like ourselves). Max was fascinated by the ceiling fans.

And almost just as quick, our order came: one chili dog, one chili half-smoke, one cheese burger, an order of chili cheese fries, a chocolate milkshake, and a Coke. (I can only imagine Kat groaning about what people put in their bodies these days!)

The lil' chrunchie now has some competition with Ben's fries.

On the way to the car, Max helped Dad work off some of those calories.

Was it the best Mom had? At the time, she thought was good, but not spectacular. The visit was made more worthwhile because of the character of Ben's. But now as she posts this, she's craving a dog. Hmm-mmm.

  1. Uhm, Kat is not opposed to putting "crap" in your body occasionally. Your soul needs it. Ben's is on her list of places to try....so take that. :o)
